2025 BMW Z4 M40i First Look: What the Manual Will Cost You

Porsche has no problem moving manual transmission sports cars, even in the U.S., with high take rates of its stick-shift 718 and 911 models. BMW has taken note, and is now offering the 2025 BMW Z4 convertible with a manual for the first time, hoping to inspire a new crop of customers. The new manual deal comes with a specially tuned “Handschalter” package, and is only available on the more-powerful M40i trim, at least for now.

Since the manual is limited to the M40i trim (for now, it’s only available with the 3.0-liter inline-six engine good for 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, limited to a top speed of 155 mph, and with a claimed 0-60 mph run of just 4.2 seconds. So far, we only have model year updates for the M40i.

For the first time, manual-equipped M40i cars get bi-color M light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design staggered with 19-inch wheels up front and 20 inches in the rear. All M40i trims, regardless of shifter, get BMW’s variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential at the rear axle, with an adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers as well.
